“BACKGROUND: The aim of this retrospective study was to determine whether the type of preservation solution significantly alters outcomes in lung transplantation, with particular emphasis on primary graft dysfunction and mortality.

METHODS: Data on 310 consecutive lung transplant patients, which were prospectively collected, were analyzed. The main outcome variables were all-cause mortality and primary graft dysfunction. Patients were grouped according

to donor organ preservation solution, either Euro-Collins, Papworth solution or Perfadex. Multivariate analysis with an additional sensitivity selleck chemicals analysis utilizing a propensity score for the use of Papworth solution was’ performed.

RESULTS: Papworth solution was associated with significantly JPH203 concentration increased mortality compared with the other preservation solutions [odds ratio (OR) = 2.36 (1.21 to 4.58), p = 0.01]. Perfadex was associated with a reduced incidence of primary graft dysfunction

at 48 hours (OR = 0.23 [0.08 to 0.68], p = 0.008). Increasing donor age was also associated with increased risk of death (OR = 1.03 [1.01 to 1.04], p = 0.004).

CONCLUSION: Papworth solution for donor lung preservation is associated with an increased mortality in lung transplant recipients. J Heart Lung Transplant 2011;30:414-9 Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.”
“Diamond has unique properties which make it the ideal material for use in synchrotron instrumentation. X-ray optics made of diamond are almost transparent, they possess strength, and are subject to very low thermal expansion; therefore they will be able to withstand Kinase inhibitor Library the powerful beams generated by fourth-generation light sources without compromising brilliance. For this reason, several groups are

attempting fabrication of refractive lenses and zone plates made of diamond. Lithography and, in general, microfabrication technology, are the ultimate tools for the innovation of synchrotron focusing optics. We propose to combine modern silicon microtechnology with advanced deposition methods to fabricate nanocrystalline-diamond lenses for third-and fourth-generation synchrotron sources. The fabrication method is described here and microfocusing synchrotron tests are illustrated. (c) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi: 10.1063/1.3517060]“
“BACKGROUND: Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) contributes to morbidity and mortality after transplantation. We examined the effect of immunosuppressive regimen on the risk of developing PTLD after pediatric heart transplantation.
